The pain of arthritis can be reduced and controlled

Older people should not have to suffer with the arthritis pain in progress.

Although arthritis can not be cured, it can be kept under control with a combination of simple treatments and changes in lifestyle.

We share 7 tips to help your older adult reduce and control their arthritis pain.

It can take a bit of trial and error before finding what works best for them, so be patient and keep trying different things.

1. Work with the doctor.

Before your doctor's appointment, observe or talk with your older adult for a few days to find out where the pain is, when it is worse, and with what activities you are fighting the most.

Write these observations and discuss them with your doctor.

Having specific information helps the doctor understand the symptoms, rule out other conditions that may be causing problems, and recommend treatments.

2. Use heat therapy.

The heat loosens joints and stiff muscles, stimulates circulation and reduces muscle spasms.

Try heating pads, microwave thermal wraps, air-activated heat patches or pain-relieving creams to discover which is the most effective.

But be sure to protect the delicate skin of older people from direct contact with heat packs by keeping a thin fabric between the skin and the source of heat.

You can also make a DIY heat pack by heating a damp towel for 1-2 minutes. Place the hot towel in a plastic bag and wrap it with a dry towel to protect the skin. Instant heating without cost!

3. Use cold therapy.

If the heat is not doing the trick, try cold therapy. There are a variety of wraps and cold pads that facilitate the maintenance of ice on the knees, wrists and other parts of the body.

Cold compresses can be uncomfortable at first, but can numb deep pain. Rubbing ice cubes or a small ice pack on painful areas also reduces swelling and inflammation.

Be sure to use a towel to prevent the skin from directly touching the cold pack and take breaks after 10-15 minutes (or earlier for fragile skin) so that the skin does not get too cold.

Tip: Some people get the greatest pain relief from arthritis with heat and cold. Heat therapy sometimes works better at the beginning of the day because it relaxes the muscles around the joints. Cold therapy at the end of the day can minimize the inflammation of daily activities.
